A Local Hero: Shaldon from Awasi
This is the story of one of our many incredible local coaches. His name is Shaldon.
In December 2021, Sport Creates Memories launched our very first football league and clubs in Kenya. About eight hours from the capital city of Nairobi, we discovered a small village called Awasi. Here, we established five football clubs, each with around 60 children so that all age groups could participate and enjoy the game.
One of the coaches in Awasi is Shaldon, the head coach of the football club Never Alone, which was established in partnership with the Danish Superliga club Brøndby. Despite the challenges in his own life, his joy and passion for coaching the village children shine through in everything he does.
Each of the five clubs had one or two local coaches who helped us build and run the league in Awasi. From the moment we arrived, it was a very special place. The warmth and kindness from the young players, coaches, and parents made everyone feel welcome. Since the league was established, we have returned every year to visit the community.
Shaldon is 28 years old. Both of his parents have passed away, and he lives in a small shed with his brother. Every day he fights to give the children the best possible opportunities, and you will almost always find him on the football field surrounded by young players.
Shaldon currently does not have a job. When asked about his future, he explained that his dream is to become an even better football coach, take coaching courses, and help even more children in Kenya develop through football.
But Shaldon's impact goes far beyond the football pitch. In addition to coaching the children, he has helped several players return to school. When children from his club get sick, he does everything he can to help both them and their families. He always puts others before himself.
Since we started the club Never Alone in 2021, Shaldon has been the driving force behind it. Today, he stands as a true inspiration and role model, not only for the children in Awasi, but for all of us at Sport Creates Memories.
